Wally Hirsh

Like so many people in this era, Wally Hirsh was encouraged to write his life story. His family fled from Nazi Germany in the late 30s. Many did not survive the Holocaust. Wally Hirsh and his family made it to New Zealand and settled in Milton, South Otago. His story talks about a life fulfilled...a rich career in education, a number of years in the position of New Zealand's Race Relations Conciliator and Human Rights Commissioner and the joys of raising a family. Writing, publishing, tramping, travel, ceramics and many other activities enriched his life and he received many awards and honours throughout it. He and his wife Adele have worked at rebuilding an extended family scattered throughout the world. Reflecting on a life fulfilled "in this land of milk and manuka honey" Hirsh also reflects on the losses to individuals, family and humanity through the worst chapter of man's inhumanity to man.
