Teaching Trunks

A multi-faceted learning resource available to schools around New Zealand

Picture
This resource, suitable for Years 6 - 13, helps bring the Holocaust Centre to the classroom, giving teachers access to tools to aid in teaching the Holocaust to New Zealand students.

Included are:

  • Books for students and teachers to use across a wide range of levels and reading abilities.
  • Replica items including postcards, yellow Star of David, passport, and more.
  • A teaching guide for teachers, including activities to use the replicas and books in the classroom.
  • Posters
  • Links to videos and website activities

The teaching trunks bring the use of primary sources to students, enable the interpretation of events through those sources, and help students think critically about what they are reading and learning in history.

The trunks present the Holocaust through the lens of New Zealand history, giving teachers and students the chance to examine the events of the Holocaust in Europe, while also learning the impact of the Holocaust here in New Zealand.

Since launching this resource in 2021,  the response we have received from schools has been very positive.

"The physical resources would be great for us, as experiential 'hands-on' history works well for our kids."

 - Anne E., Opunake High School, Taranaki

"Time wise, be less of a burden on busy teachers - not having to print resources off."
- Kimberly V., Lincoln High School, Christchurch

"A great alternative for those who cannot access the Centre easily!"
- Libby P., Tawa College, Wellington

Trunks are free to schools NZ, through the generous donations of our benefactors.

Schools are only required to pay a conditionally refundable $350 deposit, which covers any lost, broken, or missing items in the trunks while the trunks are at the school.

Whilst this resource is essentially provided free of charge, we would appreciate a koha to cover postage and handling.

Intermediate schools and Years 9-10 can hire a trunk for four weeks at a time, while NCEA Years 11-13 can hire a trunk for an entire term.
For more information, please contact Kristopher Clancy, Education Director, at [email protected].
