Teachers Seminar at Yad Vashem — Holocaust Centre of New Zealand

Since 2013, the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand, in partnership with Yad Vashem, has facilitated a biennial study tour for between 25–30 New Zealand educators. This intensive seminar takes place at the International School for Holocaust Studies at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, Israel. To ensure this world-class professional development is accessible, generous scholarships are provided to every participating teacher.

The seminar is named in honour of Inge Woolf z"l, the founding director of the Holocaust Centre, whose vision and tenacity were the driving forces behind establishing this pathway for New Zealand educators.

The programme includes:

Specialised pedagogy: Theories and practical strategies for safely and effectively teaching the Holocaust.
Historical analysis: Deep dives into the complex interactions between victims, perpetrators, and bystanders before, during, and after the Holocaust.
Expert instruction: Curriculum delivered by global leaders in Holocaust education.
First-hand testimony: Opportunities to meet and hear from Holocaust survivors where possible.
Curriculum alignment: Direct connections to the New Zealand Histories and Social Sciences curricula.
NCEA integration: Support for the latest NCEA standards across History, Social Studies, English, Media Studies, and Religious Studies.

Impact beyond the classroom

These educators return to New Zealand with a wealth of knowledge and pedagogical tools, enriching their classrooms with insights from world-leading experts. Beyond the academic study, participants experience the cultural and historical landscape of Jerusalem and Israel.

Upon completion, Yad Vashem graduates join a dedicated alumni network, continuing their journey as supported leaders and mentors in Holocaust education within their local school communities.
